If you live in Kettering, you already have one way to get rid of big stuff. Rumpke is the city’s trash hauler, and it will take up to three bulk items a week from your curb. You don’t have to call or schedule anything. A couch, a mattress, a dead dryer, all fair game.
That covers a lot of situations. It doesn’t cover a basement full of boxes, an estate cleanout, or a garage nobody has parked in since the Bush administration. Three items a week turns that into a months-long project.
That’s where a hauler comes in. We don’t haul anything ourselves. Tell us what you’ve got and where it is, and an independent hauler who works in Kettering will get in touch with a price.

How it works
- Send your request. Fill out the quote form with your ZIP code, what needs to go, and when you’d like it gone. Photos help if you have them.
- A hauler gets in touch. An independent hauler who works in Kettering will contact you to talk through the job. Some can quote from photos, others want to see it first.
- You get a price and decide. Nothing gets loaded until you’ve agreed to the price. If it’s not a fit, you’re not out anything.
Check the city pickup first
Kettering runs a single-hauler program, so Rumpke is the only residential trash service in the city. For bulk items, here’s how it works:
- Up to three bulk items per week, put out on your regular pickup day
- No scheduling or phone call needed
- Appliances, mattresses, box springs, sofas, and large furniture are the usual items
- Every bag set outside your cart counts as one bulk item
- Not sure if something qualifies? Call Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171
If your pile fits inside those limits, that’s probably your easiest route.
When a hauler makes more sense
- You have more than three items, or a whole room’s worth
- It’s a basement, attic, or upstairs room and you don’t want to carry it out
- You need it gone by a certain date (moving, closing on a house, listing it)
- It’s heavy or awkward, like a pool table, a hot tub, or a piano
- Rumpke won’t take it
What doesn’t go in the trash or on a junk truck
The city says batteries, paint, tires, pool chemicals, propane tanks, syringes, and electronics don’t belong in your trash or recycling. Most haulers won’t take them either. Household hazardous waste goes to the Montgomery County Solid Waste District’s Moraine Transfer Facility at 1001 Encrete Lane. Call 937-225-4999 for hours and fees before you go.
Yard debris and Christmas trees
Kettering has a Yard Debris Center that’s free for city residents. Rumpke will also take yard waste with your regular trash. Use your cart first, then put out up to three extra bags. Christmas trees get picked up through January 15, with the ornaments, lights, and tinsel removed. Trees over nine feet need to be cut in half.
What affects the price
Mostly it’s how much room your stuff takes up in the truck. Stairs, a long carry to the driveway, and very heavy items can bump it up, and some things (mattresses, appliances with refrigerant) can carry extra disposal fees. Each hauler sets their own prices, so quotes for the same job can differ.
What to put in your quote request
Your ZIP code, a list of what’s going, roughly how much there is, whether it’s inside or at the curb, and any stairs. Photos help a lot. We serve all of Kettering, including 45409, 45419, 45420, 45429, 45439, and 45440.
Questions
Can I just use Rumpke instead of a hauler?
For up to three items a week, yes. A hauler is for bigger jobs or when you want it all gone in one visit.
Will they come inside the house?
Usually, yes. Mention stairs and tight spots in your request so the quote is accurate.
Do I need to be home?
For most jobs, at least at the start. Some haulers will work from photos and pick up curbside items. Ask when they call.
What about stuff that’s still in good shape?
Donating beats hauling when it’s clean and usable. Call before you go, because furniture and mattresses are where most places say no.
